What started way back in 1989 with America’s Funniest Home Videos and their $10k grand prize is now continuing with Current TV and their $100-$1,000 bounty for anything that makes it on the air. As long as technology continues to lower the barriers to entry (and quality) and there are business models that incentivize non-professional producers, you will see content from a broader array of sources on your TV set (if you have one yet 😉 ).

Ernie, first of all my Dad read your comment, and he says: “Ernie is way cool. Anybody who finds joy in Skatetown is worthy.” Obviously, he doesn’t know you like I do ;-). Anyway, my first point (and the entire point of my previous post on this subject) was that I more than roll my eyes at mentions of “UGC” – I actually stand up and leave the room (at least I vowed to, I won’t divulge whether or not I’ve actually stuck to that vow). I totally agree with you on the context side (as Randy would say, “context is king”), and that’s really what I was trying to get across. The context of how and why amateurs or semi-pros are creating content (whether it be videos, podcasts, or blog posts) is fragmenting, and so there is no way to neatly define this meta-category of “UGC” even if one was so inclined. I write this blog for fun, so I use 360. But if it were good enough to make any money off and I wanted to do so, I would have to go elsewhere. Does that mean that the categorization of the content I create now changes somehow? Not in my opinion.

Maybe it’s because we come from different backgrounds – you from a thoroughly solid entertainment background, me being a nerd, albeit one obsessed with pop-culture – but the term “UGC” has always made the engineers I hang out with roll their eyes. I’m not really sure what the executives think UGC is, but if you ask me, it’s depends on the context of the product, and I’m not even THINKING video. You wrote a blog post about UGC! That’s UGC to me.

But what do I know?

By the way – your dad being the executive producer of “Skatetown, U.S.A.” somehow brings me endless amounts of joy. Endless. Amounts. Of. Joy.
